Liverpool transfer dilemma: Cody Gakpo future complicated by Tottenham interest

Liverpool face another important decision in the final weeks of the transfer window, with Cody Gakpo’s future becoming a talking point after interest from Tottenham Hotspur.

The Dutch forward remains highly valued at Anfield, but reports of Spurs making contact have raised questions over whether Liverpool could consider a major offer for a player who has been an important part of the squad since arriving from PSV Eindhoven.

Speaking on Anfield Index’s Media Matters podcast, David Lynch joined Dave Davis to discuss the situation, explaining that Liverpool are not actively looking to sell Gakpo but would consider their position if Tottenham were to make a significant financial offer.

Liverpool stance on Cody Gakpo remains clear

Liverpool’s current position appears to be that Gakpo is not available, with Lynch explaining that the club are not looking to push the forward towards the exit door.

However, the journalist suggested that almost every player has a price, especially when clubs receive offers that force them to reassess their plans.

“That’s as I understand it. I think that they’re not by any means going to give him away or kick him out the door,” Lynch told Dave Davis. “But if Spurs put a huge amount of sum of money down, then Liverpool will sell him is my understanding.”

Lynch added that the different reports around Gakpo’s situation can all be viewed as accurate depending on the circumstances.

“I think everybody is kind of right really and that Liverpool aren’t looking to sell but it you know if Spurs give a certain amount of money then it’s something they’ll consider and he’s not necessarily for sale by any means but everybody amongst certain group of players absolutely has a price.”

Tottenham interest creates Liverpool attacking questions

The Gakpo situation comes at a time when Liverpool are already reshaping their forward line following Mohamed Salah’s departure and their pursuit of Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain.

Dave Davis questioned whether Liverpool would need another attacking addition if Barcola arrived and Gakpo departed, with Lynch suggesting the club’s thinking is already focused on strengthening the forward department.

“I think so,” Lynch responded. “There really is a feeling they need to add more in attack and that’s not just kind of one in one out with Barcola.”

That means a Gakpo departure would create another significant decision for Liverpool’s recruitment team. The club would need to balance the financial opportunity of a major sale with ensuring Andoni Iraola has enough attacking options.

Liverpool must avoid repeating transfer mistakes

Lynch’s biggest concern around potential player sales is not necessarily losing individuals, but the timing and preparation involved in replacing them.

He referenced Liverpool’s previous decision to sell Luis Diaz as an example of why the club must be careful when allowing important attacking players to leave.

“I still hark back to the Luis Diaz sale and this is why I have major worries about if they do sell Gakpo,” Lynch explained. “I’ve got very little faith because of how hard they find it to make signings and how hard they’ll tell you it is to do their job.”

The Liverpool journalist believes the club should only sanction departures if they are fully prepared to strengthen afterwards.

“Don’t make the sale then. Don’t make the sale of Diaz. Don’t make the sale of Gakpo. Don’t make the sale of Jones if you are going to really really struggle.”

For Liverpool, Cody Gakpo’s future could become one of the defining decisions of the closing weeks of the transfer window. Tottenham’s interest has created a situation where the club must decide whether the Dutch forward remains a key part of Iraola’s plans or whether a significant offer changes the equation.

With Liverpool already looking to add attacking quality, any decision around Gakpo will need to be carefully managed to ensure the squad moves forward rather than simply replacing one question with another.
