Ruben Amorim’s tenure at Manchester United is entering a decisive phase, with senior figures at INEOS preparing to review his position after a turbulent start to the campaign.
United’s poor form, compounded by heavy criticism from within and outside the club, has sharpened focus on the Portuguese coach. With three fixtures before the next international break, Amorim has little margin for error according to David McConnell in the Daily Star.
United have taken just four points from their opening four Premier League matches, leaving them languishing in 14th place. The statistics are stark: eight league victories from 31 matches since Amorim’s appointment 10 months ago. That return has left sections of the dressing room increasingly unconvinced about the direction of the team.
Publicly, the board insists that their faith remains intact. Privately, the sense is different. Key decision-makers are prepared to evaluate performances over the next three matches before deciding whether to push forward with Amorim or seek alternatives.
United’s run is daunting: Chelsea at Old Trafford this weekend, a trip to Brentford, and then the visit of newly promoted Sunderland. Anything short of a clear improvement could leave Amorim’s position untenable, particularly with a daunting clash against Liverpool awaiting after the international window.

This is not uncharted territory for United. Last season, the club dismissed Erik ten Hag after repeated public assurances of support. Amorim himself oversaw a 15th-placed finish in his first campaign – United’s lowest in over half a century. That backdrop amplifies the scrutiny now, especially under the gaze of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS, whose influence over football operations is steadily increasing.
Amorim has been urged by senior staff to show greater tactical conviction and consistency in team selection. There is an acceptance that his long-term ideas are attractive, but results remain the only currency at Old Trafford.
Should INEOS decide change is necessary, a shortlist of potential successors has already been discussed. Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner has admirers within United’s leadership, while Fulham’s Marco Silva is also under consideration. Former England manager Gareth Southgate continues to command respect in the corridors of power, with Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola regarded as an emerging name.
Mauricio Pochettino, now leading the USA national side, remains a long-term candidate. He was previously in contention before Ten Hag’s appointment and continues to attract interest due to his experience at the top level and capacity to manage elite players.
The next three fixtures could ultimately shape the trajectory not only of Amorim’s tenure but of United’s season. Poor results would likely trigger a change, and with high-profile alternatives readily available, the club faces a pivotal decision.
For now, Amorim retains his role. But the expectations are clear: improved performances, tangible results, and evidence that the team is finally moving forward under his leadership. Without that, the search for alternatives may quickly intensify.
