Juan Carlos Rivero drew criticism during Spain’s World Cup last 16 tie with Portugal after confusing goalkeeper Diogo Costa with the late Diogo Jota on TVE’s broadcast.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the slip came in the second half as Portugal played out from the back, when Rivero referred to Diogo Jota, who died in a car accident in 2025 alongside his brother André, rather than Costa.

Viewers quickly flagged the mistake on social media. While his on-air mix-ups are often met with jokes and criticism, this one caused greater discomfort given the recent tragedy attached to the name.

Rivero has previously been accused of muddling details on TVE commentaries. He once mentioned Mexico instead of Peru ahead of a Spain friendly, and credited a goal to Jesús Navas that had been scored by Ferran Torres.

He also referred to Torres as Ferran Martínez during another match.
