Jürgen Klopp has condemned political involvement after FIFA annulled Folarin Balogun’s suspension at the White House’s request, a move that could allow the American striker to face Belgium in the World Cup last 16 in the early hours of Tuesday, pending a Belgian federation appeal.
The tie is scheduled for two in the morning on Tuesday. Belgium coach Rudi Garcia called the reversal an April Fools’ joke, while Norway boss Stale Solbakken said it was a very bad decision.
“If that is really the case, and the White House stepped in, then it is insane. Football is ours, not theirs,” Klopp said. He told Magenta TV.
On Gianni Infantino and Donald Trump, he added: “Those two people, who know nothing about football, should not get involved. It was a red card. There is nothing to discuss. We are sorry for Balogun, because he did not do it on purpose. But that is what the laws say.”
The case has drawn strong reactions in recent hours.
