Julen Guerrero and Estepona complete escape from 14 points adrift | OneFootball

Estepona secured their place in the Segunda Federación on Saturday, completing a rescue that began with them 14 points from safety when Julen Guerrero arrived. They beat Real Madrid C in the play-out, drawing the first leg in Valdebebas then winning the return at Muñoz Pérez.

According to El Correo, the Athletic great took over as general manager in mid-December. Manolo Sánchez was in the dugout and the club’s majority shareholder is Juan José Hidalgo, owner of Globalia and Air Europa and a former Salamanca chief.

Results shifted quickly. From a late December draw at home to Almería B through to this weekend, Estepona lost only two matches, the rest were draws and wins.

A committed travelling support underpinned the climb. The club ran buses and fans made trips to places such as Yecla and Linares.

Guerrero has since thanked the Estepona family for their backing, notably after his wife, Elsa, died a few weeks ago, when he received a warm ovation.
