Julen Guerrero will continue for another season at Estepona. The Andalusian club have extended his tenure as general manager after he oversaw a dramatic escape from relegation.

The club said in a post that he will remain for one more year, consolidating the project he began in December. The 52-year-old, a former Athletic captain and Spain youth coach, has quickly won over supporters in Málaga.

Survival had looked unlikely, the team were 14 points from safety and marooned near the bottom. From late December, after a home draw with Almería B, they lost only twice through to Saturday.

That run carried Estepona into the play-out and kept hopes alive. Manolo Sánchez’s side then beat Real Madrid’s second reserve team, winning at the Muñoz Pérez, to secure their place in Spain’s fourth tier.

Guerrero’s joy at keeping Estepona up has come during a painful year personally. In mid-April he lost his wife, Elsa Landabaso, a death that prompted widespread shock across Spain.
