Juninho has officially dropped Robinho Jr. and played under his chosen name as Santos beat União São João 3-0 on Saturday. The 18-year-old scored one and set up another at Arena Mercado Livre Pacaembu.
According to Globo.com, the change is permanent and began in the friendly, with Juninho displayed on the teamsheet and on his shirt.
A youth product, he had long been known as Juninho. On reaching the first team he chose Robinho Jr. to honour his father, Robinho, a Santos icon.
Robinho has been in prison since March 2024, serving a sentence for gang rape committed in 2013 in Italy. At CT Rei Pelé he is called Juninho day to day, and the club formalised the switch during the mid-season break.
His season with the seniors has been mixed. In May he went about a month without playing under Cuca, and a return to the under-20s was considered.
In the same period he reported to the board that Neymar Jr., the No 10, had slapped him during training. The matter was later settled and the Brazil international apologised. Juninho now has 26 first-team appearances for Santos.
