Arne Slot’s position at Liverpool is quickly becoming untenable, he’s already lost the faith of much of the fanbase.
In his first season as Jurgen Klopp’s successor the Dutchman seemingly announced himself as one of the best head coaches in Europe.
Slot won the Premier League at the first time of asking, becoming one of just five managers to ever do so, but his second season has been massively disappointing in comparison.
Liverpool’s 4-0 defeat to Manchester City on Saturday was one of the lowest points of the season, and it feels like Slot’s time is running out.
Last season the Dutchman seemed to be the perfect successor to Klopp, but now the German is being backed for a surprise return to Anfield.
Klopp hasn’t taken a job in management since he left the Anfield dugout, and his current role sees him working as Red Bull's global head of football.
The German has refused to rule out a return to Merseyside, and now he is being tipped to make a comeback to his former role to return Liverpool to glory.
Speaking to Football Insider, Everton’s former CEO Keith Wyness has revealed that there are strong rumours circulating about Klopp’s return.
“There is that rumour strongly circulating in my network [that Klopp could return],” Wyness said.
“Now, Xabi Alonso, to me, is still the favourite to take over. I think the dream of Jurgen coming back is a bit of a big dream, but it would obviously be the go-to fantastic solution that would perk the Liverpool fans up.”
Despite being a former Everton man, Wyness is certainly right about Klopp being an appointment that would win Liverpool supporters over.
There are few men that the Anfield faithful trust more than Klopp, and if the German wanted to return then there would be few objections.
The thought of Klopp returning is exciting, but it may be a bit farfetched.
