With the new season only a week away, Real Madrid are working hard on their preparations for the opening fixture against Osasuna.

However, things do not seem to be going as per plans for manager Xabi Alonso as he has had multiple fitness setbacks to deal with in midfield.

Federico Valverde out of pre-season friendly

After Eduardo Camavinga suffered an injury over the weekend, it has now emerged that key midfielder Federico Valverde is also dealing with a problem.

Indeed, according to journalist Arancha Rodriguez, the Uruguayan international is out of the pre-season friendly against WSG Tirol in Austria due to a muscle overload.

Valverde, as such, will not be travelling to Innsbruck for the game and will stay behind and rest in Madrid, aiming to recover in time for the opening game next Tuesday.

Instead, manager Xabi Alonso has called up young midfield prodigy Thiago Pitarch to the squad for the trip to Austria.

The 18-year-old gem has been one of the revelations of the pre-season so far for both Castilla and Real Madrid first team. He even scored on his unofficial debut in the friendly against Leganes last week and could now get a chance against Tirol.

As for Valverde, it is important for him to rest and recuperate, considering that he will have a huge role to play in Xabi Alonso’s debut season as manager.
