Joe Edwards has paid tribute to his Plymouth Argyle teammates after their win over Portsmouth at Home Park on Tuesday night.

The Pilgrims' captain missed the game after undergoing surgery earlier in the day, on a hamstring injury he suffered in the recent 3-3 draw with Preston North End.

As a result of that injury, the 34-year-old is not expected to be back in action for Wayne Rooney's side until after the new year.

But despite his frustrating individual situation, it seems Edwards was at least still able to enjoy the result his teammates delivered in his absence later that same day.

Edwards reacts to Plymouth win over Portsmouth

Following their 3-0 defeat to Leeds United at Elland Road on Saturday afternoon, the hosts will have been looking to bounce back quickly at home against Pompey on Tuesday.

After a goalless 82 minutes of few clear chances for either side, it was the Pilgrims who took the lead late in the game.

A long ball forward by goalkeeper Dan Grimshaw was latched onto by Burnley loanee Michael Obafemi, who forced defender Regan Poole out of the way, before firing into the bottom far corner.

That was the 24-year-old's second goal in 11 appearances in all competitions for Plymouth this season, and it proved enough to secure a 1-0 win from that game.

Not surprisingly, Edwards appeared delighted with the result, as he gave his reaction to that win for his side.

Taking to social media to give his verdict on Tuesday's events, the Pilgrims' captain wrote: "Love it boys!!! Just what we needed".

Rooney's side are next in action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Pride Park to face Derby County.

For their part, Portsmouth remain at the foot of the table, and they are now five points from safety as things stand.

A big win for the Pilgrims

This result does feel like it could prove to be an absolutely vital one for Edwards and his side, come the end of the season.

Plymouth's home form has been excellent this season, which has been vital given the struggles they have endured on the road.

Given their current position in the league, that does mean that wins at Home Park may be integral to any hope they have of avoiding relegation this season.

Indeed, with Tuesday night's clash coming against a side below them in the table, it did feel crucial that they picked up three points, to keep a potential rival at arm's length.

That is something they were able to do thanks to Obafemi's goal, and with that making it mission accomplished, it is unlikely there will be much concern about anything else from the game.

With that in mind, you can certainly understand the reaction to this result from Edwards, given he will know the significance of it to his team.

After some excellent wins at Home Park, it will be interesting to see if this is now the one that helps Plymouth to kick on and start to pick up some vital points in their away outings as well.
