Following their early UEFA Champions League and Coppa Italia eliminations, Juventus will shift their focus entirely to the race to make the top four and the future, and will soon hold summits with Luciano Spalletti and Dusan Vlahovic, Corriere dello Sport reports (via Tuttomercatoweb).
The Bianconeri have already gotten to work, renewing the contract of Kenan Yildiz, and Weston McKennie will follow suit. Their officials want to know whether the Serbian striker is in talks with other clubs, for instance, Barcelona or Milan. More importantly, they’ll verify whether he’s willing to stay at a reduced rate. He’d have to settle for a €6/7M salary, way down from his current €12M clip.
Vlahovic had shown well in his few appearances after Spalletti took over Juventus before sustaining a major thigh injury. The brass will try to lean on that too. The marksman should resume practicing fully next week.
At the same time, the Old Lady wishes to have continuity of the bench and must make sure to be on the same page with the gaffer. The boss is looking for reassurances about the plans and the transfer market, rather than about his contract. He wants reinforcements to build a credible 4-2-3-1 with sound backups in every role.
It’d be a little surprising if the former took a pay cut, but he’s also never seemed in a rush to leave in all the previous instances he was dangled on the transfer market. What happened with Antonio Conte last year left a scar, so they aren’t going to do much better than their current manager. They might as well keep him and fulfill his sensible demand after trying all sorts of solutions in vain.
