Juventus' Under-20 team suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat away to Real Madrid, with Navascues's goal less than a quarter of an hour in proving decisive, with Juve missing out on the chance to earn their first UEFA Youth League points of the season.
A very difficult away match against the hosts, Real Madrid, who kept the ball well and started off in high gear to try and put Simone Padoin's men on the ropes from the very start.
The first 10 minutes only yielded one shot from the edge of Real Madrid's area, with Juventus looking to sit deep and strike on the counterattack.
In the 12th minute, however, Real scored from a corner kick via a Navascues deflection in the six-yard box, breaking the deadlock.
The Bianconeri, however, remained undismayed, searching for space up front to try and level the score, but were unable to create any chances. Real Madrid, however, had another chance with another cross from the left in the 35th minute, with the home side's Rivas' header hittiing the crossbar this time. Seconds later Juventus' Boufandar was forced off due to injury, making way for Milia.
Finocchiaro then had a chance from an excellent counterattack in the 39th minute, but his shot was blocked by the Real Madrid defense, while Rizzo came very close to equalizing with just 60 seconds remaining in the first half, also following a corner. Despite the deficit, Juventus U20 remained vibrant, going into halftime trailing 1-0.
At the start of the second half, Simone Padoin's players continued to try to level the scores with a good move by Verde on the right in the 49th minute with a perfect cross for Merola, anticipated at the last moment by Real shotstopper Navarro.
The match seemed significantly more balanced in the second half, with Real Madrid still controlling the game but unable to find a way to finish it off. At the other end, the Bianconeri managed to respond well, but were unable to get a real shot on target.
Tensions rose during the final moments of the match when Merola was sent off in the 86th minute for a retaliatory foul on Fortea, marking the end of the Bianconeri's third consecutive Youth League defeat.
