Kalvin Phillips is reportedly keen to extend his Sheffield United loan into next season, with both parties open to the idea. The Star reports that another temporary move could happen.

The 30-year-old joined on January deadline day for the rest of the campaign, dropping into the Championship from Manchester City.

He impressed early but has not featured since 22 February, when a straight red in the Steel City derby was followed by knee surgery. There is hope he returns before season’s end.

Phillips is said to be revitalised under Chris Wilder and is living closer to his Leeds-based family. He is not thought to be open to a European move and will have one year left on his Manchester City deal in the summer.

United would welcome another loan, impressed by his attitude and humility, though they can only cover part of his wages. He has also helped younger midfielders Oliver Arblaster, 22, and Sydie Peck, 21.

Any extension is likely to hinge on Manchester City's willingness to compromise financially. A return would reunite him with former Leeds team-mate Patrick Bamford for a full campaign, the pair having won the 2019/20 Championship under Marcelo Bielsa before impressing in 2020/21.

Bamford arrived as a free agent in November after leaving Leeds in the summer, then signed an 18-month contract in January. He is United’s leading Championship scorer with nine goals in 23 appearances, including 17 starts.
