Kalvin Phillips has sent a message to James Milner after the Leeds United great confirmed his retirement. Milner said in a post on Monday that he was ending a 24-year Premier League career.
The 40-year-old leaves as the player with the most Premier League appearances, 658 in total. He won 13 major trophies, including three league titles and the Champions League, having started out at Elland Road.
Milner spent his final seasons at Brighton & Hove Albion. The Seagulls were keen to extend his stay, but he decided the time was right to hang up his boots.
Tributes have poured in. Jonathan Woodgate hailed him as an example to players, while Phillips wrote, "Congrats on an amazing career, mate. All the best for what comes next."
Dominic Matteo praised his former team-mate as the ultimate professional and role model, urging him to enjoy a well-earned rest. Robbie Keane was also among the Leeds United figures to send their respects.
Milner's influence in the dressing room has been cited as a key reason for his longevity. A quick move into coaching would not be a surprise, and a future return to Elland Road on the staff would be a full-circle moment.
