Before swinging the axe on Ruben Amorim, Manchester United explored the possibility of signing Carlos Baleba in January.
Brighton & Hove Albion swiftly knocked back United’s approach last summer and their stance remains unchanged during the winter transfer window.
Baleba was considered Amorim’s dream target. It remains to be seen how his departure will impact United’s pursuit of the Cameroon midfielder.
Interestingly, the Seagulls are reportedly willing to entertain January offers for another of their star players.
According to TEAMtalk, Manchester United are expected to be in the running to sign Brighton winger Kaoru Mitoma.
The report states: “With Man Utd now reverting to a formation that puts greater emphasis on goalscoring wingers who can beat their markers in one-v-ones, the chance to move for Mitoma could appeal.”
It is understood United have been “alerted to a potential opening” for the Japan international, given they have an historic interest in the 28-year-old.
The Saudi Pro League are also in the race, having already seen their bid of over £50 million turned down last year for the Japanese winger, known for his quick feet and sharp turns.
It is understood that “intermediaries are making contact with all camps to see if a deal could be a possibility.”
Mitoma will enter the final year of his contract at the Amex Stadium next season.
It has been previously reported that Amorim wanted to sign an experienced Premier League striker this month.
One of the names on his wish list was Danny Welbeck, who has scored eight goals in 20 league appearances this term.
The former Red Devil has established himself as one of Fabian Hürzeler’s most important players. As things stand, he will be available on a free transfer at the end of the campaign.
