Kasper Schmeichel has confirmed he will retire from football because of a serious shoulder injury.

"When my contract with Celtic expires in June, I will stop my active football career. It is a decision that has been made for me," he told Danish outlet TV2. "I have consulted various surgeons and experts in relation to my shoulder, and they have told me that I should not expect to return to playing top football."

The Denmark goalkeeper suffered the injury against Portugal over a year ago, continuing after Brian Riemer had used all his substitutions. It was aggravated in Celtic’s Europa League defeat to VFB Stuttgart in February, and surgery left him facing a year out.

Schmeichel joined Leicester from Leeds United in 2011 under Sven-Göran Eriksson and made 479 appearances. He won the Premier League in 2016, the FA Cup, the Championship title and the Community Shield. He left in 2022 for OGC Nice, then had one season with RSC Anderlecht and two years at Celtic.

His 13-year, 120-cap Denmark career was recognised by the federation, which highlighted his debut in Skopje, a World Cup bow against Peru and a European Championship semi-final at Wembley.

Schmeichel is due to attend Leicester’s 5000/1 Anniversary match on Saturday, a two pm kick-off, though he will not play.
