Kenzo Kies, 21, who is under contract with Guingamp, is reported to be in a state of brain death after a drowning incident in the Rhône north of Lyon, according to BFMTV.
The incident occurred on Monday late afternoon in a no-swimming zone. Firefighters were alerted shortly before 18:30, with temperatures at 38C, to assist four young men in the river.
They were at the seuil de la Feyssine between Villeurbanne and Caluire-et-Cuire, an area known for its danger where a man died in August 2025 while trying to save his dog.
Three were already out of the water when crews arrived, while a fourth, in his early twenties, was pulled from the river in a critical state and taken to hospital.
Born in Lyon, Kies began at FC Lyon in 2010-2011 before joining Olympique Lyonnais’ youth set-up from 2011-2017.
He moved to AS Saint-Priest in 2017-2018, then continued his development at AS Saint-Étienne from 2018-2025.
He signed for Guingamp last year and has yet to make a Ligue 2 appearance.
