Manchester City could face off against Kevin De Bruyne in the Premier League next season, should a direct rival decide to open talks with the Belgian this summer.

The outgoing Belgium football legend provided yet another reminder to football fans and those of a Manchester City allegiance over the weekend that class remains permanent, irrespective of age in the game.

With the club trailing 0-2 at home to Crystal Palace inside the opening 22 minutes, De Bruyne provided a stunning free-kick to inspire his side back into the contest before offering an assist to Mateo Kovacic to complete a comeback en route to a 5-2 home victory.

Given the level of performance on show from the 33-year-old, many were left wondering now really is the time for the Manchester City icon to step away from the very top of the European game, amid widespread interest from the United States and Saudi Arabia.

Speaking in an interview with Norwegian television after City’s 5-2 win over Crystal Palace, Kevin De Bruyne was quizzed for the first time on his career prospects beyond the Etihad Stadium when his contract expires this summer.

“Next year I don’t know what’s going to happen but if teams come and they can convince me that something sporting is nice, a nice project, I’m able,” De Bruyne responded when asked for his thoughts on a new club.

“I know obviously I’m not the youngest anymore but I still feel I’m able to perform at a very high level. I don’t know what teams are interested, or what they want to do, but whatever project is available, I’m willing to listen.

“I love football, I love to play football, and if a nice project comes and my family is also good with that, then we’re able to make a decision.”

Kevin De Bruyne’s response led to the obvious question, but perhaps beyond-belief idea, as to whether his career in England could continue with another club away from Manchester City after leaving Pep Guardiola’s side.

“I don’t know. Honestly, I don’t know. It could be, it could be not. It’s very hard because the decision of leaving (Manchester City) has not been that long (ago) so nothing can be decided in a week,” the 33-year-old admitted.

“And also in the football world, I don’t think everything comes in a week. It goes very slowly. I’ve not even seen my family since the announcement. So I need to speak (with them) and I need to see whatever team wants me, so I don’t know, I have no idea, so we’ll see.”

Understandably, De Bruyne’s comments on his future have got rival fans excited about the unimaginable prospect of one of the game’s all-time greatest attacking midfielders joining their club at the end of his career.

However, for now, the most likely switch for the midfielder remains out to Florida as Inter Miami – part-owned by David Beckham – continue to lead the chase in Major League Soccer for his signature come the summer.
