Kevin Keegan has said that he is responding well to a new treatment after being diagnosed with stage-four cancer.

It was disclosed in January that Keegan had been diagnosed with cancer after the 74-year-old was admitted to hospital with “ongoing abdominal symptoms”.

The former England captain and manager has since been undergoing treatment.

"They said we have a top doctor with this new way of fighting what you have got. Which is stage four cancer," Keegan said at an event at the Tyne Theatre and Opera House in Newcastle.

"He was a Liverpool supporter so I went to meet him. I knew I wouldn't be walking alone, if you know what I mean."

Keegan made more than 300 appearances for Liverpool in the 1970s before joining Hamburg, where he twice won the Ballon d’Or.

Capped 63 times for England, he had a short spell in charge of his country at the turn of the century having begun his coaching career with Newcastle after concluding his playing days in England with the club.

A second, eight-month managerial stint on Tyneside ended amid tensions with owner Mike Ashley, and Keegan hopes to return to St James’ Park next season to bid a fonder farewell.

"I want to say goodbye,” he explained. “I didn't get the chance when I left the club last time.”

Newcastle sent a message of support to Keegan on social media.

“We send our heartfelt support and warmest wishes to Kevin Keegan and his family following his recent diagnosis of stage four cancer,” the club said. “Kevin holds a unique and cherished place in the history of Newcastle United, and in the hearts of our supporters. His passion, leadership and connection to the club and city have shaped some of our most memorable moments.
