Kevin Keegan has died from cancer aged 75. His family announced the news in a statement, expressing immense sadness. The quicksilver forward won the Ballon d’Or twice, in 1978 and 1979.

At Liverpool he became one of the world’s best, lifting the European Cup in 1977, UEFA Cups in 1973 and 1976, three Premier titles in 1973, 1976 and 1977, and the FA Cup in 1974.

During that era he faced Real Sociedad in a 1975 European Cup tie, playing at Atotxa on Arconada’s debut. The first leg finished 1-3 and the return ended 6-0. He captained Liverpool in both matches, completed 90 minutes and did not score.

After his triumphant spell in England he joined Hamburg, winning the Bundesliga in 1979. He returned to play for Southampton, then won promotion with Newcastle in 1982. He retired in 1984.

Keegan moved straight into management, most memorably at Newcastle United, where he restored the club to the forefront. He also managed Manchester City.
