Kevin Volland, 33, has announced his retirement after 16 years in professional football. The former Germany forward said in an Instagram post that taking the decision was difficult, that his career end had arrived, and he thanked supporters, adding he would miss the game.

He began and ended his career with 1860 Munich, most recently in Germany’s third tier. His decision follows the club’s off-field turmoil, including administrative relegation to the fourth tier and the threat of bankruptcy because of financial problems.

Volland made 277 Bundesliga appearances, scoring 80 goals and supplying 67 assists for Hoffenheim 2012-2016, Bayer Leverkusen 2016-2020 and Union Berlin 2023-2025. He won 15 Germany caps and scored one goal.

He also featured in 86 matches in the French top flight for Monaco, with 28 goals and 22 assists.

Monaco signed him in summer 2020 for €15 million.
