Kevin Volland, 33, has retired from professional football at the end of the 2025/26 season, closing a 16-year career. He returned to 1860 Munich last summer and featured in the 3. Liga.

After a difficult campaign, he admitted his enjoyment had faded, saying: “Too much has happened in the last year. At some point, the fun got left behind,” he told the Allgäuer Zeitung.

The season ended in disappointment on and off the pitch as 1860 Munich were plunged into insolvency, resulting in demotion to the Regionalliga. The circumstances are believed to have influenced his decision to stop playing professionally.

Volland enjoyed successful spells with Hoffenheim, Bayer Leverkusen and Monaco. His most prolific period came at Leverkusen, where he scored 44 Bundesliga goals across four seasons.

In a farewell message, he said the choice was not easy for him and accepted that the end of his career had arrived. He thanked supporters for the journey and said he would miss the game enormously.

Although stepping away from the professional ranks, he is set to join his hometown side FC Thalhofen to play alongside his brother, Robin.
