Barcelona have not deviated from their strategy to sign Julian Alvarez despite Atletico Madrid’s repeated insistence that the Argentina international is not for sale.

Public statements from Enrique Cerezo and Miguel Angel Gil Marin have done little to change the mood within the Catalan club, where confidence remains that the operation can still be completed.

The latest Barcelona transfer news suggests the club always expected negotiations to extend beyond Atletico’s initial rejection.

Rather than reacting to the public comments, Barcelona are sticking to the timeline already outlined by president Joan Laporta, with the coming days expected to be decisive once the FIFA World Cup concludes.

Barcelona sticking to transfer roadmap

Barcelona’s plan has remained unchanged throughout the negotiations.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the club believes the most realistic opportunity to complete a deal will arise during the first team’s pre-season camp in England, when several international players return to club duty.

That timetable also aligns with Flick’s own plans, as the manager hopes Alvarez can join the squad immediately after the World Cup, allowing him to work with the Argentine forward during the final stages of pre-season.

With Alvarez focused entirely on international duty until the World Cup final, Barcelona have deliberately avoided making further moves out of respect for the player.

Instead, next week has been identified as the point when discussions are expected to accelerate.

Club officials believe there will be important developments once Alvarez is free to concentrate on his club future, while Barcelona are also preparing new steps despite Atletico Madrid continuing to present a firm public position.

Player’s stance and high-level talks keep Barcelona hopeful

Barcelona’s optimism is largely based on two factors. The first is the belief that Alvarez is determined to explore the possibility of joining the Catalan giants once his international commitments come to an end.

The second is the ongoing dialogue taking place away from the spotlight.

While relations between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid became tense before the World Cup, the negotiations now extend beyond the two clubs themselves.

Barcelona have maintained close contact with Atletico’s ownership group, the Apollo investment fund, which also has strategic links with Goldman Sachs, the financial institution that remains Barcelona’s principal creditor

Those relationships are viewed as an important part of the club’s long-term strategy.

Lastly, it is important to note that Barcelona are not putting all of their transfer plans on hold.

Rather, the sporting department has continued exploring alternative attacking options should the Alvarez deal ultimately prove impossible.
