Michael Olise impressively demonstrated at the World Cup just how effective he can be as a playmaker. This could raise an interesting personnel question for FC Bayern—since Vincent Kompany will have several top-tier options for the number 10 position in the future.
Michael Olise impressed at the World Cup, and not just on the wing. After France’s national team coach Didier Deschamps moved him from the right wing to the attacking center during the tournament, the Bayern star really came into his own. Although France fell short of winning the title, Olise’s performances once again underscored his exceptional qualities as a playmaker.
In an interview with the French newspaper L’Équipe, the 24-year-old also explained why this role suits him particularly well: “This role offers more freedom. That’s where I played as a youth player. That’s why it feels most natural to me.”
According to information from *kicker*, Olise would like to play this position more frequently at the club level in the future. This could develop into one of the most intriguing personnel questions for FC Bayern in the new season.
Following Thomas Müller’s departure and the failed transfer of Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala appeared to be the intended long-term solution at the number 10 position. The national team player was even given the prestigious number 10 jersey. However, due to his injury, Vincent Kompany has recently had to rethink his plans.
Serge Gnabry took over the role behind Harry Kane and impressed with strong performances. At the same time, summer signing Ismael Saibari and top prospect Lennart Karl are also ready to fill the central attacking role. If Olise now also makes a permanent claim to this position, Kompany would have several high-caliber options for a key position.

The question, however, is whether a position change would actually be the best solution. On the right wing, Olise is already one of the most dangerous attacking players in Europe. With his cuts inside and precise finishes into the far corner, he has developed into one of Munich’s most important offensive weapons.
However, the Frenchman impressively demonstrated at the World Cup just how much potential he has as a playmaker. Although he didn’t score a goal himself, he set up seven goals, making him the tournament’s top assist provider and even tying a historic record set by Pelé in 1970.
For Vincent Kompany, this very development could become a real luxury problem. With Musiala, Gnabry, Saibari, Karl, and now Olise as well, the Bayern coach has an extraordinary number of options for the number 10 position—and thus one of the most exciting challenges to address ahead of the season opener.
