Kaizer Chiefs striker Khanyisa Mayo has weighed in on the club's persistent goal-scoring woes ahead of their clash against Orlando Pirates in the Soweto derby at FNB Stadium on Saturday (15h30).

While the Glamour Boys have notably improved in defence, with goalkeeper Brandon Petersen sitting on 15 clean sheets across all competitions, they have an alarming low conversion rate at the other end of the pitch.

Mayo, who's on a season-long loan with an option to buy from Algerian giants CR Belouizdad, attributed the lack of cutting edge to pure luck, noting the amount of chances Chiefs create per game.

“I think it's just pure luck on the day because I think we create seven or eight chances per game and we manage to score one or two goals but that wouldn't give us the total tally to be up there in the goal-scoring charts,” he said.

"But for us it's to take one game at a time and be positive that we help one another as attackers to say if you get a chance to put it in the back of the net then you just have to put it in the back of the net and if it doesn't happen we will create more chances for you to keep on improving.

"As you saw with the other games, we've been creating so many chances but failing to convert, but it's for us to keep level-headed and keep on motivating each other as attackers to score for the team.

With the derby synonymous with fine margins, the former Cape Town City talisman has called for cool heads, with maximum points and bragging rights at stake.

“I don't think we have to be too overconfident about it but as players we have to manage our emotions because it's a game of emotions but for us it's to partake and to help the team get the maximum results that we can get,” Mayo added.

"But it's for us to also become level-headed because once emotions start to creep in you start losing yourself into the game. But it's a game where the mental aspect of the game [is important], we have to control our nerves, be in the right frame of mind and the right frame of performance.
