Valencia president Kiat Lim met the family of Fernando Martín Carreras this morning, after the Valencia Femenino B coach died last December in a boat accident in Indonesia alongside his son Mateo and his partner’s children, Lía and Quique.

According to Superdeporte, Lim, accompanied by corporate director Javier Solis, met widow Andrea Ortuño and Fernando’s father, Pedro, along with other relatives. The meeting lasted around one hour, during which he reiterated the club’s support.

On 10 January Valencia paid tribute to Martín before the Valencia v Elche match at Mestalla. A discreet private gathering was held in the Sala Juan Sol, followed by a minute’s silence before kick-off.

Valencia and CD Alcoyano have also agreed to create the Memorial Fernando Martín, honouring the former Valencia academy and women’s coach and an Alcoyano legend, as well as the relatives who died in the 26 December maritime accident.

Martín died when a tourist boat sank off Padar Island, east of Bali. His body was recovered on 4 January, a loss that resonated across Valencian football.

He was 44 and led Valencia Femenino B after a long playing career in Tercera and Segunda B. A rugged centre-back comfortable on the ball, he was valued for his leadership and guidance to younger players.

After emerging from Valencia’s youth system, he played for Benidorm, Cultural Leonesa, CD Alcoyano, Cartagena and Ontinyent, finishing at La Nucía and Paterna.
