Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna believes there is more to come from his team after they continued their good form with a win over Stoke.
Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna insists there is more to come from his side as they continued their good form with a 1-0 win over Stoke City at Portman Road on Wednesday night.
Many had tipped the Tractor Boys for promotion before a ball was kicked this season, but they endured an inconsistent start to the campaign.
Whilst the recent defeat to Oxford suggests that Ipswich are still not the finished article right now, that is their only loss in ten Championship games, which has put them into the top four as they chase an automatic return to the Premier League, and they recorded a statement 3-0 win over leaders Coventry City on Saturday.

Their latest victory over Stoke means Ipswich are five points behind second-placed Middlesbrough, with Millwall sitting one point above the Suffolk outfit, so it’s shaping up to be a fierce battle for automatic promotion, even if there is a lot of football to be played.
Yet, when quizzed about whether Ipswich have finally clicked as they look to build momentum to chase down Coventry, Boro and Millwall, boss McKenna wouldn’t get carried away, but he did tell the East Anglian Daily Times that his team can still get better.
“Let's see. It's certainly a step in the right direction," McKenna admitted.
"Saturday was a step. I thought tonight was another step again. We've just got to keep trying to improve and take little steps forward.
"We'll see where it takes us in the end. It's only two games, only six points, but it's a couple of steps forward. The challenge now is to try and maintain that.
"I don't want to go down that route (has everything come together). I'm certain we can still improve. When you start to think it's all coming together, the next thing will come to bite you. It's very much a team, a group in progress.
"I can see progress, but you've got to keep earning that every day in training and in each game.”
You can understand why McKenna doesn’t want to get carried away, and most would agree that he is right to say that there’s more to come from his Ipswich team.
When you look at the strength in depth the Tractor Boys have, it’s a scary prospect for the rest of the division. That was evident on Wednesday, as the likes of Jack Clarke, Chuba Akpom, Sammie Szmodics and Jens Cajuste came off the bench, whilst Jacob Greaves and Ben Johnson were unused subs and George Hirst was suspended!
So, they really do have an outstanding squad, but that does bring expectation, and perhaps dealing with that was difficult for the group in the first month or two of the season.

However, they have now become a lot harder to beat, and with the attacking talent they boast, as Jaden Philogene demonstrated against the Potters, Ipswich are always going to score goals.
Another positive for McKenna and the group is that the vast majority have been there and done it at this level in the past, so they know how to last the distance in this promotion battle.
With all of that in mind, Ipswich will feel they are in a good position right now, and if McKenna’s belief that there’s more to come is shown over the next few months, there’s every chance they will surge into the top two places.
