Klopp as national team coach? Bayern bosses are conspicuously holding back

Jürgen Klopp is considered the top favorite for the position of national team coach, but no official agreement with the DFB has been reached yet. The fact that FC Bayern has not yet commented on the ongoing talks has surprised many—but Lothar Matthäus doesn’t see anything unusual in this.

Talks between the German Football Association (DFB) and Jürgen Klopp have been making headlines for days. The former Liverpool coach is considered the DFB’s top choice, but an agreement or official announcement has yet to be reached.

While numerous experts and former national team players have already commented on Klopp’s possible appointment, FC Bayern has remained conspicuously silent. This is a rather unusual scenario, especially considering honorary president Uli Hoeneß, who has repeatedly spoken out in the past whenever German soccer was the topic of discussion.

In an interview with BILD, Lothar Matthäus was asked about precisely this situation. The discussion also touched on whether the Munich club might view the DFB’s potential new leadership structure critically—after all, Rudi Völler and Hans-Joachim Watzke, two long-time executives from Leverkusen and Dortmund, respectively, hold key positions.

Matthäus: “Bayern is satisfied with the current setup.”

For Matthäus, there’s no reason for such speculation. “There’s absolutely no need. I believe we have sensible people in place. With Rudi, we have someone who’s gained experience in all areas. And with Jürgen, one of the most successful German coaches in soccer history,” explained the record-holding national team player.

Matthäus also commented on the role of DFB Managing Director Hans-Joachim Watzke. “And of course, Aki Watzke has repeatedly been a co-decision-maker in recent years—not a sole decision-maker, but a co-decision-maker.”

His conclusion is clear: “I believe Bayern Munich is satisfied with this setup.”

In Matthäus’s view, there is currently no reason for FC Bayern to publicly weigh in on the discussion surrounding Klopp.

The record champions are focusing on their own tasks while also knowing that numerous Bayern pros will continue to form the backbone of the national team in the future. “They’re focusing on themselves and know that they’ll continue to have players who will play an important role on the national team. And why should they comment now? It would just cause unnecessary unrest.”

With that, Matthäus offers a simple explanation for Munich’s silence. As long as talks between the DFB and Klopp are still ongoing and no final decision has been made, the 64-year-old sees no reason for FC Bayern to take a public stance.
