Königsdörffer strikes late as Hamburg hold Dortmund to a draw

After a sobering defeat in Manchester during the midweek, Borussia Dortmund returned to Bundesliga action against Hamburger SV this afternoon. In what was the two teams' first meeting in eight years, a late goal deep into stoppage time from Ransford Königsdörffer ensured HSV snatched a point in a 1-1 draw.

Dortmund took the game to their hosts inside the first five minutes as Daniel Svensson's shot from close range was crucially blocked by Jordan Torunarigha. It became very physical in the subsequent passage as neither side imposed themselves, bar Nico Schlotterbeck who headed wide from a corner routine.

Match referee Tobias Reichel was keen to let things play much to the frustration of Carney Chukwuemeka who appeared to be fouled several times. Yusuf Poulsen registered HSV's first shot on target. On the half-hour, Jean-Luc Dompé drifted in from the left but found his effort blocked by Waldemar Anton.

The best chance of the first-half fell to BVB when Maxi Beier fed Chukwuemeka centrally, but the Englishman couldn't keep his shot under the bar. HSV also had a premium opportunity of their own to go in front but the crossbar denied Capaldo's headed effort as we reached half-time scoreless.

In what was a scrappy beginning to the second-half, it took until the hour mark for Dortmund to get a half-chance through Guirassy. Eventually, the Westphalians made it 1-0 when a Pascal Groß corner found Nico Schlotterbeck. The centre-back flicked it into the path of Chukwuemeka to volley home.

Kovač introduced Karim Adeyemi for Beier soon after, while Polzin called upon Ransford Königsdörffer and Robert Glatzel in an attempt to salvage something. The latter had a great opportunity to equalise when fed by Lokonga in the box, but Kobel smothered what was a rather tame shot in truth.

With a whooping seven minutes of added time, the home support lifted once again as they started to grow in confidence. Ultimately, BVB's resistance broke when a Miro Muheim cross founds it's way into the box. Rising highest above Schlotterbeck was Königsdörffer who picked out the corner with a superb header.
