Kompany on controversial referee calls: “Nothing went our way” | OneFootball

Bayern Munich are out of the Champions League after a 1-1 draw in the second leg of their semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain wasn't enough to send them through.

Two of the most controversial moments of the match came in the first half. First, PSG’s Nuno Mendes escaped a second yellow card after the referee instead whistled for a Bayern foul – a decision that drew visible frustration from the home bench.

Shortly afterwards, PSG’s João Vitinha cleared the ball, which struck teammate João Neves on the hand inside the penalty area. Bayern’s bench appealed for a penalty, but VAR did not intervene because the ball came from one teammate to another.

The decision felt particularly bitter for Bayern, after PSG were awarded a penalty in the first leg when Ousmane Dembélé’s cross struck Alphonso Davies on the arm.

Speaking to Viaplay after the match, Bayern coach Vincent Kompany expressed frustration with the key decisions, suggesting that the major 50/50 calls across both legs went against his side.

“We were better in some moments, and in other moments they were better. We were at a similar level. The quality of the players will decide these types of games, but decisions too. Nothing went our way – if you look at the debatable moments, they always went against us. I saw a red card and a penalty tonight, but the referee didn't,” Kompany said.

“I know the rules, and that the ball came from his own player, but come on… from 10 metres with your hand above your head?”

In the interview, however, Kompany also made sure to congratulate PSG on reaching the final and praised their quality.

“It doesn’t take away from the quality of PSG. They’ve been one of the best teams in Europe for the last three years. We were unlucky, because we competed. Every time we face them, it feels like we’re so close,” Kompany said, adding that he believes Bayern would have won the game "with a little bit of luck."
