Real Sociedad could celebrate a world champion tonight, with Spain facing Argentina in the 2026 World Cup final at 21.00. Barring surprises, Mikel Oyarzabal will start.
AS reports that Oyarzabal has five goals at this tournament, and a sixth would make him the national side’s all-time top scorer, ahead of Butragueño and Villa on five.
The Eibar-born forward knows how to score in finals. He struck in both Copa del Rey finals for Real Sociedad, against Athletic in 2021 and Atlético de Madrid this past season, added another at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, scored in the 2025 Nations League, and netted the title-winning goal at Euro 2024.
Once the World Cup concludes tonight, Oyarzabal can finally start his holidays. He will be the last to return to day-to-day work at Zubieta.
Real’s internationals will return in stages. Take Kubo is due back on Thursday 23 July, Luka Sucic on 24 July, and Gonçalo Guedes on 29 July.
Oyarzabal returns on 10 August, one week before Real Sociedad begin their 2025-26 league campaign, which is delayed by a week for the txuri-urdin. Rino’s side open against Betis on Friday 21 August at 21.00 at La Cartuja.
