At 27, Kylian Mbappé became France’s all-time leading scorer after striking twice against Senegal in their 2026 World Cup opener in East Rutherford, near New York. His 57th and 58th goals for Les Bleus took him past Olivier Giroud’s tally of 57.
He opened the scoring, then added a stunning second to seal the landmark. Giroud had been the sole record holder since December 2022, when he scored against Poland in the last 16 in Qatar.
Mbappé had ended a run of three internationals without a goal. He netted against Brazil in a 2-1 win on 26 March in Foxborough, United States, then drew blanks against Colombia, a 3-1 win on 29 March, Côte d’Ivoire, a 1-2 defeat on 4 June, and Northern Ireland, a 3-1 victory on the 8th.
The Real Madrid centre-forward, a world champion in 2018, adds another national-team record to an already swollen list. He became France’s leading creator last summer with 34 assists, is the all-time top scorer in World Cup finals with 4, and remains the youngest to play two World Cup finals at 23 years, 11 months and 29 days.
He also holds the French single-season scoring mark, hitting 54 in 2022-2023, one more than Just Fontaine’s 53 in 1957-1958.
