Kylian Mbappé moved to 16 World Cup goals with a brace against Iraq on Monday, drawing level with Miroslav Klose and leaving only Lionel Messi, on 18, ahead.
Hours after Messi had taken the record to 18 with a double against Austria in a 2-0 win, Mbappé answered. He had also scored twice against Senegal last Tuesday in a 3-1 victory. L'Équipe notes the pair remain closely matched.
France's record scorer drove in a powerful left-foot strike on 14 minutes, then finished calmly from an Ousmane Dembélé pass on 54.
The match was halted for more than two hours at half-time because of storms around Lincoln Financial Field.
His World Cup haul now reads four in 2018, eight in 2022 and four already in 2026.
Only his Argentine rival stands in front, still writing his story at 38. The Real Madrid forward also became the youngest French player to reach 100 caps, at 27 years and 184 days.
