Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé played an indirect role in PSG going all-in with manager Luis Enrique. The former Barcelona manager arrived in 2023. Moreover, he guided the team to win the UEFA Champions League in his second season.
Enrique went through several Premier League clubs last season in the Champions League. The Parisians eliminated Liverpool, Aston Villa, and Arsenal; moreover, the capital club defeated Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Super Cup.
While winning the Champions is a call for an extension, Enrique extended his contract before lifting that trophy. RMC Sport’s Fabrice Hawkins reported that there’s a significant reason for the two-year extension.
During an appearance on After Foot RMC, Hawkins highlighted how Enrique managed Mbappé’s final season before his move to Real Madrid. He said that Enrique’s firm approach with the player showed PSG they had a manager capable of providing long-term stability.
“We were quite surprised—myself included—to see Luis Enrique extend his contract,” Hawkins said (h/t Le10Sport). “We were wondering, ‘He doesn’t have amazing results, so why is he renewing now?’ One of the interesting parts in the book is seeing how he earned a lot of credibility, especially in Qatar, by being firm with Mbappé.
“Contrary to what has been said, [Nasser] Al-Khelaifi never had the ability to dictate how to set up the team or to say Mbappé should be benched. When Mbappé announced he was leaving, Al-Khelaifi was very upset, but he did not ask Luis Enrique to bench him.”
This decision is paying off for PSG. The Parisians won the treble last season, and it will be interesting to see if this is a golden age for the capital club with Enrique at the helm.
