Kylian Mbappé opened the scoring for France against Iraq in their second World Cup group game.

L'Équipe notes the Real Madrid forward, 27, sparked the move in the 14th minute after trying to find Michael Olise. The Bayern attacking midfielder then dispossessed a defender and returned the ball for a fierce left-foot strike from the edge of the area that surprised Ahmed Basil.

The France captain has three goals at this tournament, and 15 across all World Cups.

He is now one behind Miroslav Klose on 16, and three adrift of Lionel Messi, who struck a brace against Austria earlier on Monday to become the competition’s all-time leading scorer.

Mbappé had already scored a brace in the 3-1 victory over Senegal.
