Ibrahim Diarra has been handed another opportunity to show Hansi Flick what he can offer, with the young FC Barcelona talent determined to put a frustrating year behind him during pre-season.

According to SPORT, Diarra returned to work under Flick on Monday after a campaign heavily disrupted by physical problems. The Mali youngster is now hoping to finally demonstrate the potential that has made him one of the more intriguing prospects in Barca’s youth set-up.

Diarra’s previous chance to impress Flick disappeared almost immediately. Just days into pre-season last summer, he suffered a serious muscular injury before later experiencing a setback that contributed to a series of problems throughout the campaign.

Barcelona have consequently prepared an individual programme designed to help Diarra avoid further setbacks. The plan reportedly combines specific strength work with a controlled nutritional programme, with the club looking to build a physical foundation that allows him to perform consistently.

That is particularly important given Diarra’s profile. The attacking midfielder combines an imposing frame with technical quality, acceleration and the ability to finish chances. He can also connect effectively with teammates, qualities that make him an interesting option in Barca’s attacking system if he can stay available.

Flick will have the final say on his future

Diarra has already provided evidence of his ability at La Masia. He played an important role for Juliano Belletti’s Juvenil A side during the 2024-25 campaign, particularly in the closing stages of a historic season that included success in the UEFA Youth League.

The challenge now is translating that promise into senior football.

His immediate future remains open, with the report suggesting that the ideal scenario could see him divide his time between Barca Atletic and Flick’s first team. However, the number of talented young players competing for opportunities means a loan cannot be completely ruled out.

For Barcelona, there should be no rush to make that decision. Diarra effectively lost an entire season of development through injuries, and this pre-season offers the club its first proper opportunity in some time to evaluate him at full fitness.

Flick has shown that reputation and age matter less than performance when assessing La Masia talent. Diarra now has the opportunity he was denied last summer. If his body holds up and his quality comes through, he could give the Barcelona coach another exciting decision to make.
