The MLS is on fire despite the World Cup break. Many teams are taking care of the second part of the regular season, and when looking for players to acquire or extend. Recently, the New England Revolution extended their star defender Will Sands to a multi-year deal.
Also, Austin FC made some coaching movements by acquiring Jim Curtin for the 2027 season. Now, LAFC is the one making moves.
According to the Black and Gold official website, the team signed a new center back who is an MLS champion.
Los Angeles FC had to reinforce its defensive side for the second half of the season. Standing fifth in the Western Conference, general manager John Thorrington found out that Cheberko was the best option to secure a solid defense.
According to the aforementioned outlet, LAFC has acquired defender Yevhen Cheberko from the Columbus Crew in exchange for a 2026 International Roster Slot.
Cheberko will be added to LAFC’s roster once the MLS secondary transfer window opens on July 13.
At the Crew, the Swedish footballer played 94 games, scoring 1 goal and 1 assist. During his time with Columbus, Yevhen Cheberko was part of the 2023 MLS Cup and 2024 Leagues Cup championships and helped his team reach the 2024 CONCACAF Champions Cup final.
About this singing, Thorrington said: “He has competed at a high level throughout his career and understands what it takes to win. We are excited to welcome Yevhen to LAFC and believe he will be an important contributor as we continue competing for trophies on multiple fronts this season.”
With Heung-Min Son, LAFC boasts an offensive powerhouse, but its defense has often been a weak point.
The arrival of Cheberko will help Los Angeles FC address these issues, as the 28-year-old defender brings extensive MLS experience to the back line.
