Lamine Yamal did the damage as Spain beat France 2-0 in the World Cup semi-final on Tuesday, extending Kylian Mbappé’s troubles against the Barcelona prodigy.
According to L'Équipe, Mbappé has now lost seven of eight knockout meetings with Yamal, a run of six straight defeats.
Against La Roja, the France captain has fallen in all three semi-finals he has contested, at Euro 2024 1-2 and in the Nations League last year 4-5, before this week’s World Cup exit.
At club level with Real Madrid, he has also been beaten in three finals by Barcelona led by Yamal, the 2025 Copa del Rey 2-3 after extra time, then the 2025 and 2026 Spanish Super Cups, 2-5 and 2-3.
Mbappé’s sole success over his junior came with Paris Saint-Germain in the 2023-24 Champions League quarter-finals, a 2-3 home loss followed by a 4-1 win in Catalonia.
Across those knockout ties, Mbappé has scored five times, including a brace in the 4-1 at Barcelona, while Yamal has three goals, one a stunning strike in the Euro 2024 semi-final, and four assists to Mbappé’s two.
