The next couple of months at FC Barcelona will be dominated by the presidential elections, which current president Joan Laporta confirmed will be held on 15 March. The sporting situation during this period is likely to take a back seat.

Laporta has confirmed that he will run again, but he is expected to be strongly opposed by Victor Font and his group, ‘Nostrales Barca’. After the announcement of the election date, Font spoke, as quoted by SPORT, and covered various topics.

On the election date being 15 March:

“We are very happy and excited about the opportunity. We wanted the elections to be held as soon as possible, but we would also have liked the chosen day to guarantee maximum participation, and we still don’t know whether there will be a match on March 15. From a competitive-tension point of view, we don’t like it, but we’re fully committed to going after this opportunity. If there is a match that day, we ask that all seats at the Spotify Camp Nou be available exclusively for members.”

Font then framed the election as a choice between Laporta and Barcelona:

“These are not elections about choosing one person or another; it’s about choosing between an outdated, personalist and presidentialist model that drives talent away and labels you a bad Barça supporter if you disagree, and what we represent: the opposite model—one of collectives, that attracts talent, that plans with rigour and transparency. The time has come for Barça not to depend on one person. These elections are about choosing between Laporta or Barça. After years of swimming against the tide, we can tell the members that Barça will once again belong to its people.”

The 53-year-old then made a proclamation. He said:

“For the first time, we may see a sitting president seeking re-election lose; that’s what the polling data tells us.”

Font then praised the sporting project under Hansi Flick. He said:

“Behind the excitement generated by Flick and the players, the situation is worrying, and the reality is mobilising thousands of members. The economic management has been inefficient: throughout the mandate we have challenged the narrative with data. Socially, this is the moment when the institution is most disconnected from its social movement. All of this has happened in a context of opacity; club legends such as Messi, Koeman and Saras have been misled… along with tens of millions paid out in unjustified commissions.”

Font reiterated his desire to call Messi and rebuild bridges with the legend:

“The first thing I will do is call Messi.”

Finally, Font promised Flick a professional structure:

“(I promise) a professional structure that will not depend on one or two people, and in which he will have more people to lean on.”

Font also revealed that Xavi felt duped by the club and had no intention to return.

It is no surprise to see Victor Font return with scathing criticism of Laporta’s board. We will have to wait and see how things play out in the coming months ahead of the elections.
