Eintracht can no longer qualify for the Champions League play-offs after a 3-2 defeat in Baku. The winner came in stoppage time after Uzun and Chaibi had scored for Frankfurt.
Three changesInterim coach Dennis Schmitt made three changes to the team that started the Bundesliga match at Werder Bremen. Can Uzun, Hugo Larsson and Ansgar Knauff replaced Mo Dahoud, Farès Chaibi (both bench) and Arnaud Kalimuendo (ineligible for the Champions League).Behind early With just five minutes gone, the Eagles were unable to stop Abdellah Zoubir’s dribble down the right flank, allowing him to cross to Elvin Jafarguliyev in the centre. Kaua Santos saved Jafarguliyev’s effort from close range but couldn’t do anything about the follow-up from Camilo Duran.
Perfect response Eintracht came up with the perfect reply to the opening goal. In the 10th minute, Uzun stole the ball off Pedro Bicalho on the edge of the box and equalised with a low shot into the left corner.Chance for DoanA fast-paced and high-intensity contest unfolded after that. With 25 minutes gone, Larsson teed up Ritsu Doan in the penalty area but he didn’t connect with the ball properly from seven metres and narrowly missed the target.Santos saves well Qarabağ also had chances: Santos made a strong save to deny Duran in the 37th minute, but after Leandro Andrade just missed the target with an effort from 16 metres, the first half finished with the score at 1-1.
Hard-fought second half The intensity remained high in the second half, with the Eintracht defence standing firm in a 5-4-1 formation and largely resisting the hosts’ efforts. At the other end, Ellyes Skhiri had a go from distance in the 69th minute but his shot was too central to trouble Mateusz Kochalski.
Chaibi scores from the spotSeven minutes later, Bahlul Mustafazada gave away a penalty with a foul on Knauff, which Chaibi converted shortly after coming on to put Eintracht 2-1 in front.
Duran levelsThe lead lasted a matter of minutes, however, as Jafarguliyev received the ball in the box and squared it to Duran, who timed his run to tap in from close range.Late sucker punchEintracht then conceded the killer goal in the fourth minute of added time. The Eagles’ defence failed to defend a pass from the right into Mustafazada, who beat Santos with a shot into the top corner from close range.
