Last-minute madness! Bayern reach the CL semi-finals

In a hard-fought quarter-final second leg, FC Bayern beat Real Madrid 4-3 to advance to the semi-finals of the Champions League, where they will now face Paris Saint-Germain

The shock came after just 37 seconds: Manuel Neuer, who had made such an outstanding save in Madrid, pushed the ball straight into the feet of Arda Güler just seconds after the kick-off, and the ball went straight into the Munich goal. This meant that Bayern’s advantage from the first leg was history after less than a minute

However, Munich’s reply was not long in coming: in the sixth minute, Joshua Kimmich stepped up for a corner and served it sharply in front of Andrey Lunin’s box, who was completely wrong-footed and stumbled into his own goal, allowing Aleksandar Pavlovic to head in behind him more or less unchallenged for a quick equalizer

It was someone else who finally gave Real the lead again: Güler stepped up to take a free-kick around twenty meters from goal in the 29th minute and converted it beautifully into the top right-hand corner. Neuer was on hand but was unable to prevent the shot

But Bayern had an answer to that as well: Dayot Upamecano raced into the six-yard box and played a perfect ball to Harry Kane in the left half-space. The Bayern striker finished the perfect pass just as precisely into the bottom right-hand corner

But that was still not enough: Mbappé made it 3:2 in the 42nd minute after Vinicius Jr. picked up pace on the left wing and played the ball perfectly into his path on the edge of the box. Not much more happened in the rest of the first half and both teams were able to breathe for a quarter of an hour

Díaz redeems FC Bayern

The second half began just as turbulently as the first had ended. Luis Díaz was the first to make his mark shortly after the restart, but his shot from a central position was deflected by Jude Bellingham and went narrowly wide left. Neuer made his first save in the 55th minute when he brilliantly parried a Mbappé shot from close range

In the 62nd minute, Jamal Musiala had his first good chance immediately after coming on as a substitute: He played a perfect pass into the box to Díaz, but the Colombian stumbled over the pass and failed to finish

Michael Olise had the next dangerous chance to score in the 67th minute when he cut inside and fired towards the left-hand corner, but Lunin managed to tip the ball over the crossbar. He had a similar opportunity around ten minutes later, but again the ball went over the goal

The bad news for Real Madrid came in the 86th minute: after a foul on Harry Kane, Eduardo Camavinga was sent off with a yellow card – and Munich immediately took advantage of their superior numbers: after a combination via Pavlovic and Musiala, Díaz got the ball to his feet in the left half-space and flicked it into the far corner

Michael Olise went one better with the final whistle: 4:3. Bayern are through to the semi-finals!
