Manchester United face an uphill task in their Women’s Champions League quarter-final after suffering a narrow 3-2 first-leg defeat to Bayern Munich at Old Trafford.
The visitors made the perfect start when Pernille Harder, a lifelong United supporter, struck inside the opening two minutes after breaking in behind the defence and finishing calmly.
United responded well to the early setback and were rewarded when captain Maya Le Tissier converted from the penalty spot after Glodis Viggosdottir handled inside the area.
The hosts continued to compete strongly but were undone again after the break when Harder used her pace to get clear once more and restore Bayern’s advantage.
Marc Skinner’s side refused to fade and levelled again within minutes, Hanna Lundkvist heading home from close range to bring Old Trafford back to life.
However, with the game seemingly heading towards a draw, substitute Momoko Tanikawa produced the decisive moment. The midfielder found space on the edge of the box before guiding a precise finish into the bottom corner late on to hand Bayern a valuable first-leg lead.
United will now need a strong performance in Germany next week if they are to overturn the deficit and reach the semi-finals.
