Losing to Bayern Munich wasn’t the only bad thing that happened to Chelsea on Wednesday night.
Their star player Cole Palmer, who had got them back into the game, was seen holding his groin at full time, wincing and limping off the pitch.
He’s had a problem since the summer, and after pulling out of the warmup against West Ham and then missing the game against Fulham and England duty during the international break, the hope was that it had been rested enough.
However the evidence of Wednesday night was that it clearly hadn’t been. Asked about it after the game Enzo Maresca claimed he thought the midfielder was “OK,” although it wasn’t too convincing.

Today he’s spoken again in his press conference and tried to spin the news positive, although without much conviction.
“Cole is okay. We have a session now, we flew back yesterday,” the manager said,
“We need to assess some players, we have some doubt. We didn’t have a session since Wednesday’s game, but we will see.”
That does sound not sound promising to us at all. Even if he’s fit to play, it doesn’t sound like he should be playing.
The issue with an injury like this is that Palmer is always going to be “OK” and Maresca is always going to be tempted to risk him, as it doesn’t look like he will be getting many points without him. But Palmer’s fitness is never going to be more than “OK” if he keeps aggravating the issue by playing.
Perhaps it’s better to just shut him down for a full month and hope that sorts it out, rather than keep making it worse?
