Another loan for Grealish looks like the most realistic option right now, with both the player and Manchester City open to extending his stay at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. Grealish became an instant hit with the fans after joining last summer, though a foot injury unfortunately ended his season in January. Even so, his eight goal contributions and 2.1 chances created per 90 minutes over 20 games show exactly why Everton are so keen to keep him.

Stones is a different story. The 31-year-old is set to leave Manchester City as a free agent this summer after 10 years at the Etihad. While there’s no transfer fee to worry about, his injury record over the last two years is a massive red flag, and his reported £250,000-a-week wages make the finances a nightmare for Everton.

On top of that, plenty of European clubs are interested, making the race for his signature even tougher. As for White, he still has two years left on his Arsenal deal, and it would take a huge fee to bring him to Merseyside. Even though he’s seen more game time lately due to Jurrien Timber’s injury, Arsenal aren’t expected to let him go on the cheap.

Should Everton prioritise Grealish over chasing either defender this summer?

To put it simply, yes, and it’s about more than just the money. Everton’s attack has been their biggest weakness all season, with Beto and Thierno Barry struggling to produce. Grealish solves that problem directly. Stones and White are great players, but they play in positions where Everton already have decent cover.

Striking a deal for Grealish, whether it’s another loan or a permanent move well below that £50 million option, gives Moyes a high-quality attacker at a price they can actually handle. Breaking the bank for a defender risks ruining the rest of their recruitment plans. Everton’s best bet is to get Grealish over the line first, then see what’s actually left in the budget.
