In their quest to sign a new striker, Lazio have turned their attention to unsettled Fiorentina man Roberto Piccoli.
The Biancocelesti are coming off their worst campaigns in terms of goalscoring, only registering 41 strikes in 38 Serie A fixtures. The club sold Taty Castellanos to West Ham United in January and brought in Petar Ratkov as a direct replacement, but the young Serbian has yet to familiarize to Italian football, while Boulaye Dia has been misfiring in the Italian capital.
Therefore, Gennaro Gattuso requested the arrival of a new centre-forward, making it an absolute priority for the summer. In recent weeks, Lazio have been linked with Lorenzo Lucca, whom Napoli are willing to add to the Mario Gila package. However, that double operation has yet to take off the ground.
According to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla, Lazio are genuinely interested in Piccoli, who cost Fiorentina €25 million last summer, but couldn’t replicate his Cagliari exploits on Tuscan soil. The 25-year-old only produced eight goals and two assists in 43 appearances across all competitions.
As the source points out, New Viola boss Fabio Grosso is planning to implement a 4-3-3 formation, and Piccoli is unlikely to overtake Moise Kean in the pecking order. Therefore, the Atalanta youth product could be open to a move. In Rome, he would find Gattuso, the manager who gave him his senior Italy debut last October.
Pedulla expects Lazio to hold a direct meeting with Fiorentina in the coming days to understand whether a deal is feasible. It should be remembered that the Biancoccelesti have been restricted to a zero-net transfer campaign, so buying Piccoli outright remains highly unlikely this summer. Nevertheless, they could try to negotiate a loan with an option or obligation to buy.
