July 31 @ Lumen Field, Seattle, WA
I’m not exactly sure what happened here last night. Did Cruz Azul simply not take this seriously? Was the team stricken low by a stomach bug? Or did Seattle simply have an outstanding game? Astoundingly, all seven goals came in the second half. Yeimar Gómez’s 48th minute header from a corner broke the seal, and Pedro de la Vega ended it in the 91st.
July 31 @ Dignity Health Sports Park, Carson, CA
I won’t lie, the empty stands at Dignity Health were a sorry sight. It seems the Galaxy faithful took a rain check for this one. Too bad for them, because it was probably LA’s strongest showing of the year. This five goal tally equalled the total number scored in the first six MLS games.
July 30 @ Chase Stadium, Fort Lauderdale, FL
If you had one guess-i as to who the player of the match was, what would it be?Lionel Messi, of course. He didn’t score, but he did register assists on both goals, including the final one in the 96th minute when his pass found Marcelo Weigandt for a tap in. If you have any doubts about Messi’s passion for the game, watch his reaction after the goal was confirmed by VAR. He loves beating the Liga MX sides.
Mazatlán FC won 11 – 10 in the penalty shootout. July 29 @ BMO Stadium, Los Angeles, CA
Not a typo. Honestly, the game paled in comparison to the penalty shootout, which went to eleven. That means a full team rotation happened; even both goalkeepers hit their shots. It was Denis Bouanga’s second time around that went high
As many wags on social media noted, the U.S.-based MLS teams fared poorly in the first day’s fixtures. All five of them lost. The sole victory was by lowly CF Montréal, who took Club Léon to a 1 – 1 draw then outlasted them 7 – 6 in the shootout.
Since Matchday 1, it must be noted, the MLS has fared much better, notching nine wins from the twelve games. Take that you American soccer doomsayers!
Four wins for the MLS on July 30th.
No penalty shootouts on July 31. Every match had a clear winner at regulation. Five victories for the MLS
Don’t read too much into this, as only one game has been played.
