Leagues Cup Preview: Inter Miami vs. Atlético de San Luis

Inter Miami begins another Leagues Cup campaign carrying the expectations that come with being one of Major League Soccer’s marquee clubs. The Herons are looking to reclaim the tournament title they won in 2023. With Lionel Messi back after Argentina’s run to the FIFA World Cup final and a roster that now includes Casemiro, they enter as overwhelming favorites against Atlético de San Luis.

The odds are heavily stacked against the Liga MX side. Not only will San Luis face arguably the strongest team in the competition, but they’ll do so at NU Stadium (Miami get to play at home in all three Phase One matches). Add a significantly deeper squad than San Luis possesses, and the challenge becomes even steeper.

Atlético de San Luis has opened the 2026 Apertura season with two draws and one defeat, hardly the form needed before facing a star-studded Inter Miami. In a group that also includes Monterrey and Nashville SC, every point will matter, leaving the Mexican club with virtually no margin for error. If they are to pull off an upset, they will have to capitalize on every mistake made by a Miami side expected to dominate possession from kickoff.

Following Argentina’s appearance in the World Cup final, Messi was granted additional time off and missed matches against Chicago Fire and CF Montréal. He returned to the squad for the August 1 match against Columbus Crew, making him available for Wednesday’s Leagues Cup opener against San Luis.

One player San Luis won’t need to fret over is Miami striker Luis Suárez. He is suspended from the competition for spitting on a Seattle Sounders staff member after the last year’s final.

Miami’s Coach Speaks Out

“Everyone is available. We’ve had more or less recovery from all of the players. That’s very important because every player wants to be at their best. Having everyone available makes us happy,” Inter Miami head coach Guillermo Hoyos said, although he stopped short of confirming whether Messi will start against Atlético de San Luis.

Hoyos also praised both Argentine stars for their eagerness to return to action.

“It’s extraordinary. Anyone who truly loves this game always has football in their heart and in their mind. You need vacations to relax a little, but you miss football very quickly. That’s just how we players are. It’s a feeling.”

Asked whether Inter Miami should be considered one of the favorites to lift the Leagues Cup trophy, Hoyos preferred to temper expectations.

“This is a very high-level competition, and the objectives are very clear for a club of Inter Miami’s quality and stature, especially with the players we have. We have to take it step by step, game by game, to reach the goals we want. It’s a very demanding competition, and that’s how it has to be approached.”

Preview: Monterrey vs. Orlando City

Monterrey enters the Leagues Cup as one of Liga MX’s best hopes of ending MLS’s recent dominance in the competition. Rayados open their campaign against Orlando City, a team that has become notoriously difficult to beat at home and one that now boasts one of the tournament’s biggest attractions: French superstar Antoine Griezmann.

Griezmann’s arrival instantly changed the complexion of Orlando City and makes Wednesday’s matchup far more balanced than it might have appeared just a few months ago.

His creativity, experience, and ability to decide matches in a single moment give the Lions a legitimate game-changer capable of matching Monterrey’s talent.

Rayados, meanwhile, remain one of the deepest squads in Mexican football despite no longer featuring Sergio Ramos or Sergio Canales. They have reloaded by signing Mexican international Orbelín Pineda and former MLS standout Diego Rossi, adding quality and versatility to an already competitive roster.

A victory in the opener would put Monterrey in excellent position in a difficult group that also features Inter Miami and Atlético de San Luis. Orlando, however, will look to feed off the home crowd and use its pace in transition, with Griezmann serving as the centerpiece of an attack capable of punishing any defensive lapse.

Preview: Nashville SC vs. León

León faces one of the toughest road trips of the opening round as it visits Nashville SC, one of MLS’s strongest home teams and a club that reached the semifinals of last season’s Concacaf Champions Cup.

The Mexican side also enters the tournament with plenty to prove. Since the Leagues Cup adopted its expanded format in 2023, Liga MX clubs have failed to reach the final, and León is hardly the intimidating force it once was.

The club that used to be among Mexico’s most feared opponents has lost much of the grit and identity that defined its golden years. Instead of competing for championships, León now finds itself battling in the lower half of the Liga MX standings. To make matters worse, the club is currently up for sale, adding another layer of uncertainty surrounding its future.

Nashville will attempt to dictate the tempo, rely on its defensive organization, and take advantage of the atmosphere at GEODIS Park to secure three crucial points.

León, meanwhile, must rediscover some of the resilience that once made it one of Liga MX’s benchmark clubs. If the Esmeraldas hope to leave Tennessee with a positive result, they’ll need to produce far more than they have shown in recent months against a Nashville side that enters the tournament looking every bit the favorite.
