Leandro Paredes can play Boca’s final Copa Libertadores group match despite FIFA’s 2026 World Cup release window beginning on 25 May. The tie against Universidad Católica is set for Thursday 28 May 2026 at La Bombonera.
CONMEBOL said in a circular that exemptions apply for players involved in confederation club finals and the final round of group fixtures, up to and including 30 May 2026.
That clarification eases Boca’s fears, since internationals, including their captain, may stay for the last round of continental competition. The provision also applies to Champions League finalists.
Paredes will play against Católica, then report to Argentina for World Cup preparations in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
The ruling also benefits other Boca players with World Cup prospects, such as Paraguayans Adam Bareiro and Ángel Romero, who could be called up by Gustavo Alfaro.
