Francesco Pio Esposito has embraced the challenge of leading Inter Milan’s attack in the absence of captain Lautaro Martinez, speaking to both Inter TV and DAZN ahead of tonight’s Serie A trip to Lecce.
The striker carries fond memories of facing tonight’s opponents, having scored his first Serie A goal at San Siro against Lecce last month.
Indeed, it was a strike that proved the catalyst for an impressive run of form.
He also holds the distinction of scoring Inter’s only goal in the Champions League first leg against Bodo/Glimt.
It further underlined his ability to deliver in important moments.
Speaking to Inter TV, via FCInterNews, Esposito was measured in his assessment of the hosts.
The young striker refused to underestimate a side that has won two consecutive matches.
“Lecce are an in-form team who make life difficult for everyone at home,” he said.
“But we have to focus on playing our game and doing our things well, nothing more.”
On what Inter need to show tonight, he was equally straightforward.
“We need to bring the right attitude from the first minute and maintain the commitment we have shown so far to continue this positive run.”
Ahead of his first return to Lecce since that memorable goal, Esposito was asked what he expects from tonight’s clash.
“A month ago it was the goal that unlocked me, I hadn’t scored for a long time and it came against Lecce. I hope they bring me luck again.”

Speaking to DAZN, via FCInterNews, Esposito also reflected on the Bodo experience and his own rapid development.
“In Bodo it was a unique experience, I had never felt that kind of cold in a game. It was a life experience, but we have already turned the page.”
On how much he has changed since the first meeting with Lecce, he was refreshingly grounded.
“Maybe a month has passed, it’s not long. A goal can be decisive for unlocking yourself mentally, but I haven’t done anything yet and I don’t want to settle.”
When asked about stepping up in Lautaro’s absence, Esposito showed exactly the right mindset.
“His absence is felt regardless of the result, he is hugely important on and off the pitch as our captain and leader. But the responsibility is always the same: playing for Inter. Whether it’s alongside Bonny, Thuram or Lautaro, the motivation is always there and it’s huge.”
