Lee Cattermole has taken his first managerial post at National League club Gateshead, signing a two-year deal at the International Stadium. He inherits the squad built by former Newcastle United goalkeeper Rob Elliot.
“They’ve all had an impression on me, everyone of them. I never made excuses as a player.” According to Sunderland Echo, he will draw on those lessons as he moves into the dugout.
Steve McClaren handed him a Middlesbrough debut at 17 in a Tyne-Tees derby with Newcastle in January 2006. The former England boss then made him Boro’s youngest ever captain for a defeat at Fulham on the final day of the 2005/06 season.
Gareth Southgate succeeded McClaren at Boro before Cattermole moved to Wigan Athletic to work under Steve Bruce. He reunited with Bruce at Sunderland in a six-million-pound switch, beginning a decade-long stay at the Stadium of Light. During that spell he played for Martin O’Neill, Sam Allardyce, David Moyes, Dick Advocaat, Paolo Di Canio and Gus Poyet.
“I saw Dick Advocaat in tears at the World Cup and he’s an incredible manager.” “Steve McClaren, as an organiser, coaching, organising, he was unbelievable.”
“Steve Bruce, he was a man manager. Sam Allardyce, he was totally different, all about numbers and where to get to on the pitch. Gus Poyet, he was incredible.”
